As I’m writing this we are in the last few days before graduation here at Champneys Beauty College.
It’s a hive of activity. Everyone is preparing for their final exams, with the underlying excitement of being ready to choose their future career and the variety of lifestyles now open to them.
The CIDESCO fast track is an internationally recognised 10 month fast track course and these girls are about to embark on the best part… Their future careers!
Some will stay with Champneys and take advantage of the guaranteed employment offered to all students, others will choose to set up on their own and choose their own path. The world is your oyster when you pick such a flexible career path.
I caught up with Kelsey Winchester for a quick chat about how her year has been. If training in beauty is something you’ve been thinking about, then keep reading for the insider’s view.
What did you do before training at Champneys?
I worked at a pharmacy and trained as a dispenser. As much as I enjoyed my time there it was beauty that I really wanted to do, so I decided it was time for a change.
My previous training has been helpful during the course though, as it covered some of the same things like anatomy and physiology so I don’t regret it.
Have you enjoyed your course?
Yes it’s been really good. It’s a lot of work but will be well worth it in the end. I’ve met some great friends over the year and I’ve enjoyed the challenge knowing that it will leave me fully prepared for the future when I graduate.
What made you pick Champneys above all the other courses?
Well I live fairly locally which helped but the main things were that I know others who had been here and been very happy.
Champneys has a real family feel to it yet still gives you an internationally recognised qualification which will stand out from the rest.
What are your plans after you graduate from Champneys?
I have an interview already lined up with Center Parks in Woburn so I’m looking forward to that. In the long run I would like to do that for a couple of years to build my experience and then I would like to work for myself and enjoy the freedom that gives.
Having completed your year do you now feel confident and ready for the workplace?
Yes definitely! I feel I know everything I will need. They teach you not only the beauty side but also the marketing and business side that is needed if you decide to work for yourself. I also know that if I need any further help after graduation I can always reach out to them too.
What would you say to someone considering the course?
Be ready to work hard but that’s a really good thing. It means you are fully prepared for your future afterwords. I’m glad I chose Champneys for that reason and doing the full time course has meant I’m ready for a complete career change after just ten months.
What would you say has been your biggest challenge?
I would say the exams. It’s what we have all trained for over the year and can be a little nerve wracking but the tutors are really good and the structure of the course means we have had lots of preparation plus mock exams, so I do feel ready.
Kelsey went on to win the Top CIDESCO therapist award for 2017 - I'm sure you will join us in wishing her the best of luck in her career.
